The marriage officer requires the following legal documents to perform a legal marriage:

South African citizens
Two uncertified copies of the bride and groom’s identity documents or passports, as well as the original identity document, and three passport photos.

Non-South African citizens
Two uncertified copies of your valid passports and visas, as well as your original passports and visas.

We do not accept temporary identity documents or driver’s licenses.

South African citizens
If you were previously married we require the final divorce order with the stamp of the court appearing on it. We do not require the full settlement agreement.

Non-South African citizens
If you were previously married we require an English translation of the final divorce agreement with the stamp of the court or embassy appearing on it.

South African citizens
If you were previously married and your spouse has passed away, we require the original death certificate and two uncertified copies thereof.

Non-South African citizens
If you were previously married and your spouse has passed away we require an English translation of the original death certificate and two uncertified copies thereof.

We need a letter on a letterhead, signed by the lawyer, if you are getting married out of community of property.

We do not require the antenuptial contract.

It is not a prerequisite for the antenuptial contract to be registered when the marriage is performed.

Please ensure that the antenuptial contract is dated before the date of your wedding day.

You do not need an antenuptial contract for getting married in community of property. The marriage status may not be altered after the marriage has been performed.

You require two South African citizens above 18 years of age as witnesses on your wedding day.
We require two uncertified copies of the identity documents or passports of both witnesses, as well as the original documents.

PREREQUISITES

• Both parties must agree to the marriage.

• We perform marriages from Mondays to Saturdays; a telephonic appointment is a prerequisite.

• The full payment is payable into the bank account up front fourteen days before the performance of the marriage

• If you want to cancel you have to send us a fax three days before the date of your marriage.

• If you cancel the day before or on the day of your marriage or do not turn up for your appointment, the money is not refundable.

• When you make a telephonic appointment you will be given a reference number you have to use when you deposit the money into our account.

• We perform civil marriages at our office in Faerie Glen, your house or venue of choice.

  • By law we are now required to check your marriage status beforehand. South African citizens must send us their ID numbers via SMS, and non-South African citizens must bring us their documentation before the wedding day.

Explanation of marriage status

In Community of Property
This means that all goods of both parties, accrued before and during the marriage, belongs to both parties equally.

Out of Community of Property, with the accrual system
This means that all goods accrued by both parties, after the wedding, belongs to both parties equally.

Out of Community of Property, without the accrual system
This means that all goods accrued by both parties, belong to the individual parties separately.
